Landscape construction: a Lake District property

We will work with clients on projects of all sizes. At this property in the Lake District the old car park was removed, and the levels were altered so the new lawn visually blended in to the golf course, when viewed from the building. New access roads were constructed and new borders were created and filled with perennials and shrubs to provide seasonal interest.

About David

David Smith has been involved in horticulture since 1992. He gained his National Diploma in Horticulture at Myerscough College, and took two years out during the course to work for HRH Prince Charles at his home in Tetbury. During his time at Highgrove he worked with garden designers Julian Bannerman and the late Rosemary Verey of Barnsley House. He completed the ground work for the famous Stumpery and worked alongside the designer (Julian Bannerman) and the Head Gardener David Magson to complete its construction, and he was responsible for maintaining and adding to the Highgrove cottage gardens, designed by Rosemary Verey.

The time he spent at Highgrove and Myerscough sharpened his plantsmanship and horticulture knowledge, and shaped his planting choices and design influences.

David now works with his industry colleagues to provide a professional landscaping service to domestic and commercial clients. Redhills Landscapes employs professional operators to provide its customers with the best quality service available. We can provide design and procurement services in conjunction with our construction and maintenance operations. We are up to date with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, and David also holds a management degree, so you can be assured of a safe, proficient service with accurate quotations and administration.

The Old Zoo, Ribble Valley

In 1999, David started work on The Old Zoo project in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley. In close conjunction with the owner, Gerald Hitman, he implemented and altered an existing design (conceived by G Hitman & Keith Pullan Garden Design) for the area around the house, and progressed to design and build the remaining 14 acres of garden.

That included construction of a lake, woodland garden, a 1km maze (designed by G Hitman), a bonsai garden and an outdoor chapel (designed by G Hitman), along with construction of various other art installations and planting schemes. Work at The Old Zoo was completed in 2005.

What our customers say

4.9 from 7 Google reviews

“Enjoy doing a lot of the gardening work myself. Bedding out and planting but on the occasions when the work has been too heavy for me or I have just needed a hand I can always rely on Lee from Redhills Landscape to come along, often at short notice, to give me a helping hand. His knowledge and hard work have been invaluable to me. Always willing to advise on best suppliers for gardening products and plants. When on holiday and at the end of the season they can be relied on to do a really good cutting back and maintenance.”

Carol Cuthbert, Google review, March 2018

“We have used Redhills Landscapes twice now for some major garden restructuring. David and his team are very professional, offering a lot of friendly guidance. The results? A stunning raised patio area built using old German railway sleepers was an inspired suggestion followed by a limestone walled and German sleeper set of steps. Highly recommended.”

John Stride, Google review, July 2018

“Really pleased with how the project went. Dave and his team filled in a swimming pool and pond in our garden, terracing and landscaping the garden completely. The outside of our house looks amazing now, and everyone who visits comments on how great it all looks, especially the stone work. The Redhill's team are really hard working, I will be using them again and have no hesitation recommending them.”

Jen Goddard, Google review, March 2018

“Redhills Landscapes were a pleasure to have working for us, the driveway and patio area they layed has transformed the rear of our property.”

david Brockbank, Google review, October 2020

“Excellent landscaping work from the team at Redhills Landscapes, delighted with every aspect of the project.”
